Horizon Bank Slicer Branch Scholarship Awarded to Sawyer Tonagel

Michigan City, Indiana – Horizon Bank is pleased to announce that Sawyer Tonagel has been awarded the 2026 LaPorte High School Horizon Bank Scholarship. A $1,000 scholarship was presented during the school’s Scholarship Award Program held on April 27 in the LaPorte High School auditorium.

Tonagel ranks in the top 10 percent of his class and has been actively involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities. He serves as captain of the LaPorte High School basketball team, is a member of the National Honor Society, and participates in the First Church of God Youth Group, among other commitments. In addition to his academic and extracurricular achievements, he balances part-time work and dedicates time to community service, volunteering with various local organizations and events.

In his essay, “Community Service Matters Because…,” Tonagel writes, “While society often emphasizes fulfilling personal desires first, community service encourages putting the needs of others before your own. It shifts the focus from individual achievement to collective growth.” He has demonstrated this mindset throughout high school and plans to carry it forward in his higher education.

Tonagel will attend Taylor University this fall, where he plans to major in business and continue his basketball career.
