Horizon Bank Donates 10,000 to Legacy Foundation COVID-19 Fund for Lake County Relief Efforts
Horizon Bank donated $10,000 to Lake County, Indiana, based foundation, Legacy Foundation, for COVID-19 relief efforts. Legacy Foundation, in partnership with Crown Point Community Foundation and Foundations of East Chicago, has distributed more than $356,000 for food, childcare, personal protective equipment, technology, educational materials, rent/utility assistance, and medical needs during the pandemic.
“The Legacy Foundation already does so much good in Northwest Indiana during a normal year, but they are stepping up even further during the COVID-19 crisis. They are deploying funds to various not for profit organizations and other agencies serving the needs of many in NW Indiana. We are certainly happy to contribute to those in need through their efforts,” stated Steve Dahlkamp, Vice President, Senior Commerical Loan Officer.
In the first phase of its COVID-19 response plan, which ran from March 30-May 18, Legacy Foundation responded to the immediate needs of nonprofits working to address the impacts of COVID-19 in Lake County. Now, the foundation is looking to mitigate long-term consequences of the pandemic on nonprofit organizations and the communities they serve.
“We took a multi-phased approach because we knew the requests for funding in the first few months of the pandemic would be different from what we would see 6 months out. Our current strategy aims to build the leadership capacity of local nonprofit organizations, support creative ideas for addressing disparities in our communities, and improve the ability of organizations to take on future disasters,” said Erica Fizer, Legacy Foundation Director of Marketing & Communications.
Already, 24 nonprofit staff and board members have received training scholarships from Legacy Foundation to attend professional development courses hosted by IUPUI Lilly School of Philanthropy. The training sessions are meant to build the capacity of leaders in nonprofit organizations, so they are better prepared to face future disasters.
Currently, Legacy Foundation is accepting applications for Innovative Response Grants and Nonprofit Capacity Building Grants. Innovative Response Grants are up to $50,000. Requests must focus on meeting the needs of communities and populations whose health and/or financial situations have been most severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and who have been historically marginalized and under-served in our country. The nonprofit capacity building grants will cover the cost of creating an emergency preparedness plan or a plan for strategic restructuring, up to $5,000.
