What you Should Know About Same Day ACH Payments

Automatic Clearing House (ACH) is an electronic network for financial transactions in the United States. The ACH network moves money and information from one bank account to another via ACH transactions throughout the day, including recurring and one-time payments for both consumer and business-to-business transactions. 

The National Automated Clearing House Association (NACHA) manages the development, administration, and governance of the ACH Network. NACHA has defined operating rules that are the foundation for every ACH payment.  By defining the roles and responsibilities of financial institutions and establishing clear guidelines for each Network participant, the Rules ensure that millions of payments occur smoothly and easily each day.  Learn more at  www.nacha.org.


You may have already noticed a change in the times during the day that we apply ACH credits to your account. This change was made to help provide you with faster access to funds for same-day direct deposits to your account.

Many merchants companies may begin collecting payments on the same day basis for paying a bill or making a payment. Thus, you may see payments come out more quickly than they have previously.

Beginning on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, we will change the times that we apply certain electronic debit payments to your account.

Key items to know:

  • When you authorize a merchant or biller to debit your account, the merchant or biller should include information or a statement about the timing of the payment. If the merchant or biller offers you the option to make a same-day payment, it might be referred to as a same-day payment or noted that the merchant or biller intends to collect the funds as quickly as possible.
  • If you have pre-authorized electronic payments, such as a recurring mortgage or insurance payment, then very likely there will be no change to the time that these payments are posted to your account. As always, Horizon will receive and post these payments as received.
  • You should always have sufficient funds in your transactions on online banking or phone banking as well as on your account statements.

In short, as part of the improvement established by NACHA regarding same-day ACH payments, we’re doing our part to make it faster and easier for our customers to make payments.
