Pokemon Go Benefits and Cautions

pokemon_goHave you gotten in on the Pokémon Go craze that’s sweeping the nation? Whether you grew up watching the quirky Japanese cartoon, or you have no idea what a Pokémon is, you just might find yourself enjoying the game.

Using augmented reality, Pokémon Go can be played in your own environment — allowing you to see Pokémon characters in your dining room or out on your neighborhood streets. The primary goal is to catch as many as you can, by physically walking close enough to their location to “catch” them in the game.

If you’re already an expert at Pokémon Go, or if you’re just getting started, here are a few pros and cons to consider:

Benefits of the Game

  • Because the game integrates real-time locations with a very simple game element, it’s already been credited with getting more people off their couches — and the extra exercise is good for both your body and your mind! If you get a Pokémon egg, you’ll have to walk even more — some eggs require 10 km of walking in order to “hatch”!
  • Many players have also credited the extra exercise they’ve gotten, with helping with issues of depression.
  • You may find yourself exploring local parks, landmarks, and businesses that you’ve never checked out before.
  • It’s a great way to socialize. Friends are getting together, and husbands and wives are getting more fun time in. People of all ages can enjoy walking together and competing to collect the most Pokémon characters. And bringing people together in real life is something few phone apps have achieved.

A Few Cautions

Of course, it’s important to be sure you’re playing the game safely. Here are a few things to be aware of:

  • Horizon Bank is heavily invested in your security, as well as ours, so please be careful where you download the app from. Use only the legitimate Google Play or Apple Store, to download from. Do not use “third party” or “Pokémon hack” sites. There are many fake versions of the app available, and some of them are very nasty!
  • Be aware that some locations such as hospitals, government buildings, & banks, prohibit the use of cellphones, tablets and cameras. Taking a picture of that elusive rare Pokémon could land you in some very hot water, not to mention expose other peoples’ sensitive information.
  • Do not Pokémon and drive! The use of a cellphone while driving is illegal in some states. It is also very unsafe, similar to texting while driving. A moments distraction could have serious consequences.
  •  Stay in brightly-lit, highly visible, public areas while you play. Because the game allows individuals to set “lures” which bring more Pokémon characters — and more players — to a specific location, you need to be aware of your surroundings and who else is in the vicinity.
  • Similarly, be sure you’re always watching where you’re walking. The app alerts you to Pokémon that are nearby, so you don’t need to stare at your phone all the time. Watch where you’re going, enjoy talking to the people you’re with, and take in the fresh air!
