Stay Safe this Holiday Season
The holiday season has officially arrived! While you’re hustling and bustling, don’t forget to keep the following household safety tips top-of-mind:
1) Handle Trees with Care
Getting a real tree? Be sure to water it daily to help avoid dry, flammable needles and branches. If you’ve gone artificial, make sure it’s one that is flame-resistant — and be sure to turn lights off every night before you go to bed. Either way, keep trees a few feet away from fireplaces and other heat sources to help minimize any fire risk.
2) Kid-Friendly Decorating and Gifting
If you’ve got small kids in the house, be sure to keep any fragile ornaments near the top of the tree. Same goes for those with metal hooks — especially if kids are under age 3. You’ll appeal to toddlers’ natural curiosity with soft ornaments or other items they can pull off the tree without worries.
Likewise, put batteries in new toys before you wrap them. Kids won’t get impatient waiting to play after pulling the wrapping paper off — and you won’t have to be concerned about them getting ahold of the batteries themselves.
3) Check the Lights
When decorating, check light strands for any exposed or frayed wires, loose connections, and similar issues. If you find any problems, throw them out. For added protection, don’t string more than three strings of lights together, or use multiple extension cords together, either.
It goes without saying that candles should be kept a safe distance from other items. If you don’t have room — or if there’s a rambunctious child in your home — you may want to consider using flameless candles with long-lasting LED lights. Some of these candles are even available with remote controls to turn them on and off quickly and easily.
5) Be Cautious with Plants
Some of the most popular plants in use around the holidays can be harmful to kids and pets. Be sure that they’re not ingesting portions of plants like:
• Christmas trees (the needles can damage a pet’s stomach)
With these tips in mind, you’ll be prepared for celebrations that are sure to be merry and bright.
