Business Chip Cards

What is a chip card or smart card?

These are credit and debit cards with a small secure microchip built into the card. Chip-enabled cards are also sometimes referred to as “EMV cards” or “smart cards.” The cards offer enhanced security by generating authentication codes dynamically when a cardholder makes a purchase.

This means that when cardholders enter their PIN or sign for a purchase, the amount is processed using a code that is different every time — making it virtually impossible for theft to occur by copying card data electronically.

What are the business benefits of using a Chip card terminal?

By implementing chip card technology, customers will have greater trust when they shop with you. So the business will benefit by building customer loyalty — and you’ll also see reduced payment fraud from counterfeit, lost, and stolen cards.

Chip Card Technology

What is a chip card?

This is a debit or credit card with a small microchip built into it. Chip-enabled cards are also sometimes referred to as “EMV cards” or “smart cards.” (EMV refers to “Europay, MasterCard®, and Visa® — the three companies behind this new worldwide payment standard.)

What are the benefits of chip technology?

Chip cards offer enhanced security, in two important ways:

a) The microchip encrypts your card’s secure information, and authenticates your payment with a unique code each time you use it. This helps prevent thefts by making it virtually impossible to copy your card’s security data.

b) Your card never leaves your sight — even in restaurants. Since chip card payment terminals are portable, your server can bring one directly to your table to process your payment.

Why is this change happening?

For better protection against fraud. The technology has already proven successful in achieving this goal, across more than 130 countries around the world. In fact, chip cards have been the standard in Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe and Asia for several years — and will now be the standard in the U.S., too.

How do I use an EMV terminal?

No more swiping! Instead, you’ll insert your card into the EMV reader. Leave the card in the reader until your purchase has been processed. Sometimes a signature will be required.

Follow your usual process for checking out online or on the phone.

Do I need a 4-digit PIN number to use my Gift Card

No, a PIN number is not required. When you make a purchase, Horizon's GiftCards are handled like any credit cards: The store clerk simply runs the card through the machine to capture the necessary account information. From there, you're on your way using your remaining GiftCard balance wherever MasterCard® cards are accepted.

Will I get cash back from any unused portion of the Gift Card?

Typically, you will not receive cash back on your purchases. Your Gift Card is a prepaid debit card. Every time you use it, the purchase amount is deducted from the available balance until that balance reaches zero. For example, if your available balance is $50 and you buy a $40 shirt, the $10 difference will remain of you card and become your new available balance.

Sometimes, in the case of returned items, a merchant may provide a cash refund.

How do I check my Gift Card balance?

That's a good question, because it's wise to periodically check your account balance. You'll be provided two options to select from to check your account balance either online or via a toll-free phone number.

Can my Gift Card ever have a negative balance?

Technically no, because any authorization request that is greater than the card's available balance will be declined. However, sometimes, a merchant allows a purchase without prior authorization or forces a transaction through. If this happens and you exceed your card's limit, you will be billed for the excess amount, plus applicable service fees.

What happens if I need to return an item?

Each merchant location has its own return policies and will handle the returns in the same manner as any other MasterCard transaction. They may credit your Gift Card, provide a cash refund, or issue a store credit.

Online Banking FAQs

I recently enrolled and have selected my login ID and password. How do I know when I can start using online banking?

Once your enrollment has been processed, you will receive a welcome email indicating that you are now ready to begin using the service.

I have recently enrolled but have forgotten the password I chose at enrollment.

Simply enter the login ID you chose at the time of enrollment, then click 'Forgot Password.'  You will be prompted to receive a new access code.  Once received and entered, you can then choose a new password.

When I logged in for the first time I was asked if I want to register the computer. Is this something I should do?

Registering the computer means that it will 'remember' you for future sessions and therefore not require the use of a security access code each time you log in.  Registering the computer is only recommended for computers you control (such as your home computer).   It is not recommended when using a public computer.

I have logged in several times and each time I am prompted to obtain a secure access code, even though I registered the computer. How can I keep this from happening?

This typically occurs if your browser is set to remove all 'cookies'.  The system recognizes you by your browser's specific cookie, and if this is absent, the system assumes you are a first-time user.  Generally, some minor changes to your browser settings will correct this issue.  Please refer to our Optimal Browser Setting Guides.

I am trying to get a secure access code and have requested that it be sent to my email. However, I have waited several minutes and it hasn't arrived yet.

When you choose to receive your access code through email, check you spam or junk folders as sometimes it might be in there. The best option for receiving the code is to request to receive it via text or phone.
